WELCOME TO MY WEBSITE!

I'm Jake. I used to work in the manufacturing industry, but now I'm a traditionally published children's author. My mission is to help empower readers and those with disabilities through entertaining and authentic storytelling. I also want to show others that anyone can be a writer, regardless of background. About

About Me

When I was little, I often struggled with chronic illnesses like asthma. I wrote stories and comics as an escape from my worries.

This led me to win a second-grade picture book contest with The Dog Swamp. I was so proud of it. Thanks to my mom, it went on to sell one copy.

During my homeschool years as a teenager, I won a local poetry contest with a poem about James Monroe. Most underrated president, right? Someone had to talk about him.

After being diagnosed with more chronic illnesses as an adult, I delved back into writing again by typing out TV episode reviews and critiques. Dozens of these letters appeared in Doctor Who Magazine, where thousands of UK readers discovered my strong obsession with the Eighth Doctor and the Cybermen throughout the 2010s. Maybe a bit embarrassing?

When a few of my film reviews made it onto BBC Radio, I felt confident enough with my writing ability to start making children's stories once more. After years of receiving enough rejection letters to build a life-sized model of Mount Everest, "The Day the Dragon Cold Came" became my first published short story when it appeared in Canada's Smarty Pants Kids in 2022. Two more tales followed in this digital publication: "Going Ape for Grape Juice" and "The Mystery of the Great Lost Something." "Mystery" features the introduction of one of my favorite creations, Neil Trekker, Space Inspector.

I was also honored to have Halloween-themed "The Sweetest Treat" digitally published by Skipping Stones Magazine in 2022. Then, the most impossible of impossible things happened: a story of mine got accepted by Cricket Media! "A Tired Tire" was inspired by both my love and frustrations with rural living. It was published in print by Cricket Magazine's Spider publication in July 2023.

And just when I thought the publishing ride had reached its peak, my first picture book was picked up by Free Spirit Publishing only a month later. My Life as an Asthmanaut: A book about asthma chronicles my struggles with asthma as a kid, but also celebrates the inner strength we have in fighting illness and the loving support that's always around us. The development of this nonfiction book, which is a part of the Disability Books for Kids Series, has been one of the most fulfilling journeys of my life, and I can't believe that it's now out in the world!

I'm working on more children's projects, so the ride isn't over yet! For news, future book tour info, and other out-of-this-world updates in my author adventure, please subscribe to my email list below or check out my blog! Onward and rocketward!hee's plenty of room!

My Books

My Life as an Asthmanaut:

A book about asthma

(Disability Books for Kids)

“I wish this book existed when my son was young and struggling to manage his asthma. It would have made him feel less alone.”

—Chris Nee, creator of Doc McStuffins

“This book is a great read for children and families navigating asthma, especially from the perspective of someone who has lived—and succeeded—with it at the highest level. As a former world-class swimmer with asthma, I found My Life as an Asthmanaut to be a powerful, relatable, and encouraging resource that helps show kids that their condition doesn’t define their limits. I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking to inspire confidence, resilience, and a sense of possibility.”

—Peter Vanderkaay, 3-time Olympian for Team USA

“The book brings real-time advice, information, and coping techniques through a space adventure, effectively turning each child living with asthma into a superhero space explorer. A perfect way to give children the power to live with and manage their asthma without letting it restrict the way they live their lives.”

—Paula Radcliffe OBE, Former Marathon world champion and record holder.

ABOUT THE BOOK

In My Life as an Asthmanaut, a young boy explains what it’s like to live with asthma. When an asthma attack occurs, Jacob feels like an astronaut floating off to outer space― with an empty air tank. Sometimes outer space is lonely―Jacob can’t always join his family and friends when they exercise or play outside during allergy season. But he has tools to manage his asthma. He stays calm as he reaches for his inhaler to refill his air tank. He counts to 10 and comes back down to earth, where he can breathe easily, surrounded by people who love him. And when Jacob sees someone else who’s low on air, he helps them find solid ground too.

I'm a huge TV/movie buff and a Star Wars super fan.

I love to do LEGO builds, but I prefer following the directions rather than making creations from scratch. Just think of the chaos!

My sister Holly also has asthma and is a TikTok influencer.

I enjoy doing impressions and making up voices.

One of my favorite hobbies is to submit fan questions and pictures to TV/movie productions. Some highlights:

1. In 2015, I had two Twitter questions answered on Rebels Recon, a behind-the-scenes program for the Star Wars Rebels TV show. Rebels Recon was later added to the bonus features of the Star Wars Rebels Season 1 DVD, so I've been included in Star Wars merch for a decade!

2. In 2016, I submitted a picture of myself covered in Doctor Who Magazines to the launch party of the 500th issue. This picture was projected behind the head of Doctor Who's showrunner, as well as during the ceremony where the magazine received a Guinness World Record. A lame claim to fame, I know!

3. In 2020, I got a Twitter question answered in an episode of Clone Wars Download, a behind-the-scenes show for the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. And yes, the question is the nerdiest!
